Anthony Hopkins paid tribute to his late fellow nominee Chadwick Boseman, following his Oscar win on Sunday,
On Monday, the 83-year-old actor took to Instagram to share a video from his native Wales, where he accepted the award for best actor for his role in The Father.
He also paid tribute to Chadwick Boseman, a fellow nominee, for his last on-screen appearance in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.
“I am grateful to the Academy and wish to express my gratitude to you. “I’d like to pay tribute to Chadwick Boseman, who was taken from us far too soon, and thank you all again,” Hopkins said.
“I was completely unprepared for this, so I feel incredibly grateful and honored,” he said.
The family of Chadwick Boseman, the Black Panther actor who was widely predicted to win a posthumous Oscar for his performance in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, has spoken out in support of the man who won the award.
The actor’s brother, who died of cancer last August, claims that his family had no animosity against Anthony Hopkins.
Chadwick Boseman’s Brother Said The Boseman Would Have Been The First To Congratulate Hopkins
Derrick Boseman told TMZ that his brother would have been the first to congratulate Hopkins. He would have congratulated him on his victory on Sunday night. According to Boseman, the late actor would have considered winning an Oscar an accomplishment rather than an “obsession,”. And that all of the nominees were deserving of the honor.
The absence of Hopkins from the telecast and the change in the running order added to the surprise result on Sunday night.
Rather than the conventional ending of the ceremony with the award for best picture, the producers ended it with the best actress and best actor. Many suspect that the producers were hoping for a win for Chadwick Boseman. This would have ended the ceremony on a high note. Instead, the ceremony ended with Hopkins’ sudden and anti-climatic absence. This was even more jarring by the lack of a host.
This year’s Oscars had a strict “no Zoom” policy, which meant candidates had to either show up in Los Angeles or at one of the “hubs,” one of which was at the BFI Southbank in London.
Hopkins, who is 83 years old, is currently in Wales and didn’t like the journey. Olivia Colman, his co-star in The Father, had been expected to accept the award on his behalf from the London center.
Even though Colman was in attendance for the early part of the ceremony, when she was nominated as the best-supporting actress for the film, this is no longer believed to be the case.
The Academy Denied Anthony Hopkins To Attend The Ceremony Through Zoom
Because of the Academy’s no-Zoom call policy, Anthony Hopkins could not deliver his acceptance speech on the night of the Oscars. The Academy switched the Best Actor award to the night’s final award, which surprised many. Many assumed this was due to the Academy’s expectation that the late Chadwick Boseman would win. Because of his role in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. Still, Hopkins won for his performance in The Father in a surprising upset.
Unlike other award shows, which used Zoom calls to ensure nominees’ safety during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Academy vetoed Zoom calls, forcing nominees to attend in person at one of the several hubs they had set up around the world to broadcast. Hopkins was nowhere to be found, so the award was recognized on his behalf by The Academy. The ceremony ended on a very dull note, with no major speeches or tributes. Because there was no one present to accept the night’s final award it.
Oscar Telecast Producers Turned Down Hopkin’s Offer To Accept The Award Through Zoom
The Oscar telecast producers turned down Hopkins’ offer to accept the award through Zoom. The star 83, lives in Wales and has no plans to fly to the hubs of Dublin or London. So he stayed at home and was asleep when the officials announced the award. This was also the case for Ann Roth, who received the Academy Award for Best Costume Design for her work on Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom at 89.
Hopkins would have had to fly to Dublin or London and stay up until 4 a.m. due to the eight-hour time difference between Los Angeles and Wales. Given that flying at 83 during a pandemic can be unpredictable. Hopkins thought it would be safe to skip the ceremony. Because fans thought Boseman to be the favorite for most of the awards season. When he realized he’d won, he gave an acceptance speech thanking the Academy and paying tribute to Boseman.
Many people would be perplexed by the Oscars’ aversion to using Zoom calls to accept awards. However still altering too much of the Academy Awards tradition. Unlike the La La Land/Moonlight fiasco in 2017, which was a big but straightforward error, making the ceremony end with no one accepting an award was a mistake that could have easily been prevented if Hopkins had been able to accept his award safely from his home or if Best Actor hadn’t been pushed to the night’s final award because they couldn’t know the outcome. Since someone will still be there to pick up the Oscar at the end of the night, Best Picture is the last award of the night.
